Disqualifying the Positive

"Disqualifying the Positive" is a thought pattern where you acknowledge good things that happen, but then dismiss or downplay them. For example, if you get a great review at work, you might think it's not because you're actually doing a good job, but because of some other reason that doesn't reflect your abilities. This way of thinking can be particularly damaging because it allows negative thoughts to persist, even when there's evidence to contradict them. It can also take the form of minimizing or dismissing your own strengths, accomplishments, or good behaviors, telling yourself they're not important or don't count.
